Junior Macias Madaula, MD, was in high school when he discovered his passion for healing. He became interested in anatomy and physiology and decided to dedicate his life to practicing medicine. His family helped influence his decision to work with seniors.
“I was raised by older adults,” Dr. Macias Madaula says. “Living with my great-grandmother who died at 100 years, and my grandmother, who just turned 100 years old, made me appreciate the frailties of the human body. It fulfilled a deep commitment to practice medicine in a special way— one that can improve the conditions of seniors by providing care that relieves suffering, improves functional ability, promotes health and well-being, independence, and overall quality of life.”
Dr. Macias Madaula is originally from Holguin, Cuba. He completed his medical school in Facultad # 1 de Ciencias Medicas Carlos J. Finlay in Santiago de Cuba in 1997. He completed General Surgery residency in 2002 in Santiago de Cuba, and soon after his specialized training in Neck and Endocrine Surgery in Havana in 2003.
He practiced as a General Surgeon and head of the Endocrine and Neck Surgery department at Saturnino Lora General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. He completed Laparoscopic Surgery Training in 2005 and started his PhD in Pedagogy/Education.
While preparing for United States licensing exams he broadened his medical experience by working in the medical field in Orlando until he relocated to Brooklyn, New York in 2012 to complete his Internal Medicine residency at NYU-Lutheran Medical Center where he graduated in 2015. During his training he had the opportunity to provide medical care to underserved communities and immigrant populations. He graduated with the Award of Humanism in Medicine and Excellence in Patient Care. Following residency, he returned to Miami where he completed his fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Miami in 2016 graduating as The Geriatric Fellow of the Year.
